FAQs

What are pastels?

I love to use Great American and Sennelier extra soft pastels. They are composed of high quality pure pigments ground with natural transparent binders. These pigments are like those used in oil paints.

I use Uart sanded paper mounted on pH neutral, buffered, archival Conservation boards. Please keep in mind that your portrait will need to be framed behind glass. I recommend UV glass or museum glass.

How long is the turnaround time?

The turnaround time is usually 12 months, it depends on how many portraits have already been scheduled.

Is framing and shipping included?

I do not offer framing but I’m happy to send framing instructions. Shipping is an additional cost. The portraits are safely packaged in foam board insulation sheathing. I build a matte and cover with the sheathing, creating a “book” and space, so nothing touches the surface of the pastel surface.

Do you take the photographs?

I certainly can! However, please keep in mind that I’m not a professional photographer. Our goal would be to get a good reference for the portrait. Sometimes I can get just the right shot, with beautiful lighting and that expression that is just the right one. However, there are times that just doesn’t happen. Also, if you are wanting a group portrait, its best to head straight to the professionals! There is a lot going on in group portraits and its best to rely on those who can manage a group photo.

The majority of the time, I use a photo you already have or one a photographer has taken, we just need their permission. I’m more than happy to go over photos with you and find one that would be just right for your portrait!

What should I look for in a reference photo?

Good lighting is key! Natural light is best, where 2/3 of the face is lit and the other in shadow. This gives such depth and life to the portrait. Photos with flash and too much lighting can result in a flat looking portrait.

Small smiles are also ideal. It keeps the eyes open and bright. Bigger grins can cause the eyes to appear smaller and makes smile lines. Small smiles are classic.

Please keep in mind that I love to work with you in getting the portrait just right. I can use other photos for hair and eye color references, clothing, and background. It’s ideal to have the clothes on you want in the portrait, but depending on the photos, its possable to use another reference. However, it does depend on the reference photos. Lighting conditions need to be similar. Unfortunately, I can’t change angles or combine too many photos. Too much guess work can change the quality of the portrait. My desire is to do the best to capture your loved one and make it something you cherish for years to come!
